Four ways of reading
Perpetual
Always under way: I have one book open at all times.
The Epic Cycle
Homer, Virgil, Dante and Milton, in the order each one answers the last, and then back to the Iliad.
Shakespeare
The plays and poems, one grouping after another — always one open.
Periodic
Not always under way, but they come round again, most often once a year.
Bible During Lent
The whole Bible across the forty days of Lent, every year.
Planned
Halloween
A shelf of ghost stories and the uncanny for the end of October.
Planned
Christmas
Christmas books for Advent and the twelve days.
Pilgrimage
Read through once, to the end, with no intention of repeating.
Peripatetic
No project at all: one book at a time, wherever it leads.
